Karnas is once again trying to become a full length comic hero, with another comedy caper 'Ragalaipuram'. He plays a bumbling cop who is a coward with oodles of luck coming his way.
The film is a remake of Sreenivasan’s 1991 Malayalam comedy caper 'Aanaval Mothiram'. The original itself was inspired from the Hollywood comedy 'Short Time'. The Tamil remake is nowhere near the original, as director Mano’s jokes fall flat and the comic scenes are so predictable.
The story itself has been told many times in commercial cinema. Velu (Karnas) a coward who can be bullied by a small kid, gets into police force as a constable on sympathy quota after his father had died in harness. In the police force due to ‘lady luck’ shining on him, he soon becomes an inspector.
One day due to mix up he comes to believe that he has cancer. To get insurance benefits for his family (mother and two sisters) if he dies in action, Velu suddenly turns brave and does daring operations.
The movie comically chronicles his new-found bravado, which makes him a hero. The director has also roped in half a dozen comedians like MS Prabhakar, Delhi Ganesh, Manobala, Singampuli, Kovai Sarala and others in the supporting cast. The idea is to make it laugh a minute, but most of comedy scenes fall flat.
Karnas as the bumbling cop has also a love interest in the form of Angana, who has only a single expression throughout the film. It has been laced with commercial elements including an item number and comedy featuring ex-sex bomb Shakeela.
Though the running time of the film is hardly 2 hours and 10 minutes it drags big time, as jokes fall flat. The music of Srikanth Deva is half baked.
